Economic statistics from the 2001 Census

This page has information and statistics about the economy of Oxford taken from the 2001 Census.

A series of questions were asked about people's economic activity

Chart 1 - Economic Activity (24kB PDF) 

Economic Activity shows results for the city, county, regional and national level.

A question was also asked about the highest level of qualifications that people held

Chart 2 - Highest Level of Qualification (16kB PDF) 

Highest level of qualification held shows the results at city, county, regional and national level.

Note that:

  • level 1 = at least one GCSE/O-level
  • level 2 = 5+ GCSE/O-level
  • level 3 = 2+ A-levels
  • level 4 = first degree

A question was asked about the main employment sectors

Chart 3 - Employment Sectors (23kB PDF) 

Main employment sectors show the city has higher levels of those employed in the education and health care sectors than the regional and national averages.

A question was asked about socio-economic groups

Chart 4 - Socio-Economic Groups (18kB PDF) 

Oxford has a lower percentage of those classified as managers and senior officials and more full time students.
