Welcome to Oxford

Disability Equality Scheme (DES)

An amendment to the Disability Discrimination Act introduces a positive duty for all local authorities to promote equality of opportunity for disabled people.

The main requirements are:

  • Consult with disabled people on their needs
  • Prepare and publish a Disability Equality Scheme
  • Prepare and publish an Action Plan
  • Implement the Scheme
  • Annually report on the progress of the Scheme

In order to carry out this duty we have jointly consulted with disability groups across Oxfordshire in conjunction with Oxfordshire County Council, South Oxford District Council, Oxford Brooks University and Oxford University.

Where can I find information about the Council's Disability Equality Scheme?

We are committed to promoting a society in which people can participate fully and equally. We also recognise that there are legislative duties regarding access, service delivery and housing. We have designed the Disability Equality Scheme to address equality and to ensure we achieve our aims as far as possible, as outlined in the documents below:

Disability Equality Scheme Action Plan (173kB PDF)

Where can I find more information on the scheme?

Please contact the Access Officer if would like to discuss this in more detail.
