Statistics from the 2001 Census

National and Regional Rankings

National Statistics produced a series of "league tables" for the 2001 Census at a national and regional level. These show that Oxford had the:

  • highest number of economically active students and the second highest number of economically inactive students in England and Wales
  • highest number of people in the South East with a first degree as their highest qualification
  • highest number of Buddhists in the South East
  • highest number of properties with no bath, shower or toilet in the South East lowest number of owner occupiers in the South East
  • lowest number of people who travel to work by car in the South East
  • lowest number of people not in work in the South East (note this does not mean the highest unemployment rate but the City has a high number of people who are economically inactive)
  • lowest number of retired people in the South East
