CANAcT has been tackling anti-social behaviour effectively since being established in November 2001; results demonstrate that they are more and more effective in doing this.
CANAcT deals largely with community based anti social behaviour, though not exclusively, and experience suggests that, often, those acting in an anti social manner often also cause other types of behaviour that is not acceptable.
CANAcT has become strongly involved in the promotion of prevention of anti social behaviour. CANAcT works with schools, the Youth Service and the Youth Offending teams, and also has worked with informal groups of young people and the Junior Wardens. CANAcT helped develop the Positive Activities for Young people programme, funded by the YOT.
CANAcT has achieved numerous successes in enforcement, including Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs), Acceptable Behaviour Contracts (ABCs), and has contributed to possession actions in many cases. We recognise that enforcement action is not always the best course of action, and that other solutions, through early intervention, are usually the most effective.
CANAcT recognises that supporting vulnerable witnesses is its core task. Anti social behaviour destroys people's confidence and it is CANAcT's duty to give the confidence back, by being available on call for witnesses 24 hours a day, and by supporting them at every stage.
