Explanation of Terms

A New Case is one which has just been taken on by a Neighbourhood Action Officer as a file that has not been dealt with for anti social behaviour or by CANAcT before.

An ABC or Acceptable Behaviour Contract is a document that is signed by a Neighbourhood Action Officer, the offender and also by a police officer.  This is a non-legally binding document that can be used towards further legal proceedings, i.e. an ASBO. A PCA or Parental Control Agreement is similar to an ABC but is signed by the child's parents who agree that they will endevaour to control their child's behaviour.

An ASBO or Anti-Social Behaviour Order is a wide ranging civil power used to control an individual's behaviour and, crucially, to exclude them from the geographical area where they are causing problems.  A breach can lead to a hefty fine or imprisonment.

An Injunction is a less harsh sanction for controlling behaviour, and can be obtained in court very quickly.

A NSP (Notice Seeking Possession) is a notice that is served upon tenants of social housing as the first stage towards eviction.  The behaviour of the tenants and visitors to the property forms grounds for this action.

An Eviction is the process by which tenants and their families are ordered to move out of their home; court bailiffs attend to ensure this happens.

A Case Conference is held when a decision has been taken by officers that the matter is serious enough to require an ASBO.  As many agencies as are involved with the alleged perpetrator are invited.

A PSM (Problem Solving Meeting) is a less formal meeting held with agencies to develop a way forward.

Mediation is usually always offered to tenants during neighbour disputes.  If a case is resolvable through mediation, then it is not a CANAcT case.
