Saturday 28th November 2015 at 7:30 pm

An explosion of joy from Beethoven and Bruckner to brighten the November gloom and set the mood for Christmas! Beethoven’s Choral Symphony (no 9) is one of his greatest works and its spectacular choral finale, the ‘Ode to Joy’, has inspired generations with its celebration of human fellowship. Bruckner’s Te Deum, by turns thunderous and ethereal,is one of the most glorious interpretations of this ancient hymn of praise.

Verdi: Requiem

Oxford Bach Choir & Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Nicholas Cleobury conductor

The Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni, regarded in his native country as on a par with Goethe, was the impetus for this most dramatic of requiem masses. When Manzoni died in 1873, all of Italy mourned, and Giuseppe Verdi resolved to compose a substantial work in memory of his literary hero. One year later, on the first anniversary of the writer’s death, Verdi conducted the premiere of his Requiem in San Marco, Milan, to enormous public acclaim. Such was the work’s immediate success that three more performances quickly followed at La Scala, and this enduring, highly emotive work has been a mainstay of the repertoire ever since. Nicholas Cleobury’s renowned skill as an opera conductor is eminently suited to Verdi’s theatrical treatment of the requiem mass.

That's All Folks...

BELLOWHEAD - The Farewell Tour

After 12 amazing years, the UK’s most successful folk band Bellowhead are calling it a day. The band plan to mark their departure in characteristically ambitious style and have announced a two-part farewell tour in November 2015 and April 2016. Their final show on May Day, 1st May 2016, will be an intimate concert at Oxford Town Hall, the very same venue where it all began.

Formed, just for fun in 2004 they never imagined that one day they’d be headlining festivals and selling out tours of major concert halls. From their first self-released EP, Bellowhead have gone on to record 5 studio albums of which they have sold over 250,000 copies. Hedonism, their 3rd album, was recorded at legendary Abbey Road and is the highest selling independently released folk album of all time. They are proud recipients of 2 silver discs, have won 8 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, released a songbook with Faber, spent 8 years as Artists in Residence at London’s Southbank Centre, recorded theme tunes for The Archers and The Simpsons at the request of the producers, and brewed their own beer... Twice! In 2014 the band signed to prestigious major label Island Records and released Revival, which entered the UK Album Charts at no.12 and led to 3 BBC Radio 2 play-listed singles and appearances on mainstream TV.

The band said ’It’s in keeping with all the musical and theatrical traditions that make Bellowhead what it is, that we will end at our peak and leave the audience wanting more. The shows always finish on a high, and so should we.’ Bellowhead have performed in front of hundreds of thousands of people and their sheer joy of performing and infectious energy has earned them loyal and enthusiastic audiences, who have made this big party juggernaut all worthwhile. These two tours will be the last chance for people to see one of the most outstanding live bands ever.

We will include any updates on here when we get them, in the meantime visit their website.

Please note we do not have a box office here at Oxford Town Hall so if you have any issue with tickets refer to SEE tickets or call 0844 811 0051.
