Acker's Back in Town - An Evening with Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band


Acker Bilk, British clarinetist and Jazz band leader, has been actively playing and contributing to British Jazz since the 1950s. In March 2001, Acker was honoured with an MBE for his services to the music industry. In 2005, Acker was also awarded the BBC Jazz Award for his unique contribution to Jazz in the UK.

Come along to experience a live traditional jazz concert by Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band. Host Greg Butler will also introduce British Jazz history and DJ his 78 Gramophone British Jazz records during intervals. Special guests are also expected.

Tickets: Main Hall £25, Balcony £30 - no concession discount to tickets. Buy tickets online, phone our Box Office on 01865 252351 or buy in person at Oxford Town Hall.

Phoenix Picturehouse cinema members can receive a £5 discount, but tickets must be bought at the Phoenix Picturehouse cinema in Jericho.

Paul Jacobsthal

Persecution & Survival
Monday 16 January to Saturday 10 March 2012
An exhibition exploring the life of Professor Paul Jacobsthal, a Celtic archaeologist who fled Nazi Germany in 1936.  Follow Jacobsthal’s story from Germany to Oxford, through internment and the war. Find out about life as a refugee in Oxford in World War II, through film, oral history, smells and family craft activities.
Exhibition created by the Institute of Archaeology, Oxford with support from The Reva and David Logan Foundation and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
 
Head Over Heels
Saturday 24 March to Sunday 3 June 2012
An exhibition inspired by Oxfordshire hats and shoes and what they mean to us. Featuring projects by local community groups about the headwear and footwear that intrigues and inspires them.
Part of a Museums Partnership Project including an exhibition at The Oxfordshire Museum.

The Voice Festival's workshops, masterclasses, concerts, competitions and networking events have been touring the length and breadth of the UK in February and March each year, spreading the a cappella art form and bringing a cappella singers together to perform, learn and have fun. Tickets £10 for adults and £7 others.

International Women's Festival Event
The Oxford International Women's Collective organises an annual festival taking place from February to March celebrating International Women's Day on 8 March. The Festival celebrates the creativity of women through theatre, music, talks, exhibitions and workshops, while recognising the struggles for equal rights at work and at home, for trade union recognition, improved working conditions, good childcare facilities and for women's voices to be heard. Evening performance 'I'm on the Train' by Drowning Fish Productions. 7.15pm - 9pm £5.

Celebrate this most romantic of dates in great style. The grandeur and glamour of the great Viennese balls of the past will be recreated in Oxford's Victorian ballroom.

The evening will start with a champagne reception, followed by a sumptuous banquet accompanied by exquisite Viennese chamber music, before the full orchestra takes to the stage, led by the witty and charming Maestro Georgiadis.

Journey into space with astronaut Alasdair Malloy as we rocket through the solar system on a musical adventure .On our voyage of the universe we'll visit the planets, explore the moon, and maybe even encounter an alien, as the Philomusica performs music from all your favourite Science Fiction shows. Come dressed in your best outer space gear for a truly intergalactic experience! Concert most suitable for ages 4-10. Pre-concert craft activities at 2pm. Concert ends 4pm. Ceroc Oxford hold dance classes at Oxford Town Hall. Beginner and intermediate followed by freestyle. Open to all.

Zumba Class
Mondays from 12.10 - 12.55pm in the Main Hall, Oxford Town Hall.
Term time only, £3 per person. Prepare yourself to party. You will shake your hips, shimmy and smile the hour away. Up to 1000 calories will be burnt in just one class. The moves are simple and you will love the music. No stress, no worry, just fun. There are no wrong moves so just come and join the party. Oxford Town Hall holds a series of lunchtime organ recitals between April and September. All recitals are from 1pm-2pm. Admission is £3 per person.

Meditation Class - Diamond Way Buddhism UK
Every Wednesday, 8pm, Judge's Room. Oxford Buddhist Group meets once a week for a guided meditation on the 16th Karmapa. These meditation classes are suitable for all who wish to learn to meditate. For newcomers there is always a short introduction to Buddhism and brief explanations on how to meditate. They regularly hold courses on Buddhism and Buddhist meditation classes, guided by experienced practitioners and travelling teachers appointed by Lama Ole Nydahl.
