Residents can now see the new pool building at Blackbird Leys taking shape as the steel frame appears above the hoardings for the first time.
The new facility is on target to be completed at the end of this year and will cost a total of £9.23 million, within the planned budget.
A new group exercise studio and meeting room has already opened and new rooms to house the crèche and a brand new soft play area have also been completed. Building work on a new sports pavilion adjoining the centre is also underway.
The crèche will be moved into the new room shortly and the soft play equipment has been ordered and will be installed next month.
Councillor Mike Rowley, Board Member for Leisure Services, says: "I am delighted to see the steel frames being fitted. We have completed stage one of the redevelopment of the leisure centre and I look forward to the next stage being completed. Many thanks to users and residents for bearing with us while the work is being done; the Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre is very much open and now has some great new facilities available for groups and families."
David Hunt, General Manager of the Centre, says: "We are thrilled to see the new centre taking shape; the fully equipped new studio is proving to be a great success and we plan to celebrate the completion of stage 1 with an Open Day on 29 May."
Work is progressing well with the new pool complex despite the wet weather in the winter and all the concreting works to the pool tanks have been completed.
