Play Area Refurbishment Programme

We are investing over £2.5 million over three years from 2009 to 2012 in refurbishing many of the city’s 87 play areas.

This is part of our policy to ensure that Oxford’s children and young people have easy access to a range of quality play opportunities within a practical walking distance from their homes.

The Oxford City Play Area Refurbishment Programme will see a complete overhaul of the current play areas with new play equipment, safety surfacing, landscaping and signage.

We have appointed Groundwork Thames Valley, an environmental regeneration charity, to project manage the refurbishment programme.

Get Involved

Consultation events are held as the designs for each site are developed. Our project managers will talk to users of the play areas to find out how they should be designed and what play equipment you would like to see in your parks.

To find out how to take part in a consultation, or to learn about the proposed plans for a play area near you, please contact Groundwork Thames Valley on 01895 832662 or email oxfordplay@groundwork.org.uk.

Play Area Design

Please see the Design for Play page of the Play England website for guidance material on play area design. Specific guidance on boundaries and fences for play areas can be found in Chapter 5 on page 68 of their Design for Play guide.

Play Pathfinder/Playbuilder Scheme

If you are looking for an opportunity to improve your local community by redeveloping a play area, please contact Groundwork regarding Oxfordshire County Council’s Play Pathfinder/Playbuilder Scheme or visit the Playbuilder pages of the Oxfordshire County Council website.

The funding scheme supports play area development and refurbishment projects across Oxfordshire, and is available to parish and district councils, social clubs, residents associations, community associations, faith groups and other voluntary groups which are suitably constituted.

Groundwork offers a wide range of support services to anyone interested in developing a play area. These services range from landscape architecture to acting as your co-applicant, in the event that your organisation is not suitably constituted.
