Our Private Tenants Guide provides information on tenants' rights, accommodation standards, renting in the private sector, harassment and illegal eviction. At the end of the guide, it also provides contact details for organisations that deal with housing issues in Oxford.

Tenancy Deposit Protection
The tenancy deposit law was introduced
in 2007 to give more protection to tenants by preventing landlords and letting
agents from unfairly withholding a tenants deposit.
Visit the Tenancy Deposit Protection pages of the Directgov website for full details.
Role of the Council
Where tenants are having problems with their landlord, we advise them to contact their landlord in the first instance but to keep a note of the details and the date on which the matter was raised.
If an appropriate response is not forthcoming the Council's Tenancy Relations Officer can be asked to investigate and to take enforcement action if that is found to be necessary.
Where we judge that informal action is appropriate that will be our first response, but formal action (in the form of statutory notices and prosecution) is sometimes necessary and is used.
The Tenancy Relations Officer cannot deal with cases involving the Council's own housing. These should be raised with a Tenancy Management Officer in the Housing and Communities service.
