Disabled Adaptations

Our Disabled Adaptations Team is responsible for carrying out alterations and adaptations to Council homes following recommendations from the Occupational Therapist (OT) who works for Social Services.

Examples of Adaptations that are carried out include:

Over-bath Showers
Level Access Showers
Access Ramps
Stair-lifts
Grab-rails

What should I do if my home does not meet my needs?

You can refer yourself to the Occupational Therapist by calling the Social Services Access Team on 0845 0507666. When contacting them you must provide the following information:

Date of birth
Your GP details
Contact telephone number
Description of what problems you are experiencing at home and what adaptations you feel would assist you

What will happen next?

The OT will assess your needs taking into account your situation and how urgent your needs are.

Depending on your needs the OT may recommend:

Getting portable aids to help you live more independently
Installing fixed aids to make things easier
Adapting your home to make getting around easier and safer
Moving to a property more suitable for your needs

The OT will then make a detailed recommendation (called a Referral).

What happens if adaptations are recommended?

The Disabled Adaptations team carries out the work in accordance with the Referral and within financial constraints.

How long will it take?

The Disabled Adaptations team will normally complete the work within 3 months of the Referral.

Is a Referral from an OT always necessary?

Due to the limited funding available a Referral will always be required except in the case of minor adaptations such as grab-rails.
