What is the David Steel Sustainable Buildings Award?

The David Steel Sustainable Buildings Award from Oxford City Council aims to recognise leading sustainable building developments in Oxford.

This award is nominated in memory of our dear colleague David Steel, who made a valuable contribution to the City Council and the Climate Change Action Team.

Developments are assessed on the level and quality of the environmentally friendly solutions incorporated.

The judging panel includes Councillors, and experts from the City Council.

What is the City Council expecting from candidates?

We want to encourage higher standards of energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy in developments. We are aiming to achieve this through the implementation of planning policies, including the Natural Resources Impact Analysis Supplementary Planning Document.

2011 Winners

The 2011 winning developments were Blue Planet Corner, Oxford High School's 2011 Building, St John's College and the Council houses at Lambourn Road.

2010 Winners

The 2010 winning developments were Magdalen School, who received the award for their extension and Brasnose College who received the award for their student accommodation in Hollybush Row.

2007 Winner

2007 winners - Representatives of St Anne's College Professor John Titchmarsh and Mr Martin Jackson with Lord Mayor John Tanner

The 2007 winning development is the Ruth Deech Building, St. Annes College in Woodstock Road. The award and a plaque was presented to Martin Jackson, bursar of St. Anne's College, in March 2008 at the Town Hall.

2006 Winner

The 2006 winning development was 34 East Street in Osney Island, Oxford. The award was presented to Mr David Hammond, who is both the owner and architect.
