Recycling, rubbish and waste

Additional or replacement recycling and waste containers

What should I do with recycling that won't fit in the recycling bin?

You can place extra recycling neatly at the side of your recycling bin in the old recycling boxes, a cardboard box or a clear plastic bag. Please do not use black bin liners.

How do I get more recycling containers?

If you are a large household, you may be entitled to a larger recycling bin. Please contact us on 01865 249811.

What if my wheelie bin or food caddy has gone missing?

If one of your wheelie bins has gone missing, please call Thames Valley Police on 101 to obtain a crime reference number and then call us on 01865 249811 to request a replacement bin.

What materials go in each recycling container?

Visit our What goes into each container page for full details.

What if I can't fit all my general waste into my green wheeled bin?

Approximately 80% of the waste in the average household bin can be recycled or composted. Please make full use of your recycling bins before placing waste into your green wheeled bin. Visit our Excess Rubbish page for more information.

How can I reduce the size of my bins?

By using the recycling service fully, you may find that the size of your bins is too large. If you would like a smaller bin, please email recycling@oxford.gov.uk or call 01865 249811. The request will be passed to a customer liaison officer to make an assessment.

Blue and Green Recycling Boxes

An improved recycling scheme was introduced across Oxford in October 2010. All households that wanted them were delivered a blue wheelie bin for their recycling.

However, residents are still able to use their blue and green recycling boxes for their recyclable materials if they want to.

Micro Chipped Bins

Our wheelie bins are micro chipped for a number of reasons:

  • So we can track lost bins, as each has a serial number relating to the property it was delivered to.
  • In the future we will be able to deal with customer enquiries better by having live information fed from the trucks to the call centre, for instance why a bin hasn't been collected or where the crews are on the round.

No personal data is held on the chips, only address data.
