Recycling and waste

Additional or Replacement Recycling and Refuse Bins/Boxes

What should I do with recycling that won't fit in the recycling bin?

You can place extra recycling neatly by the side of your recycling bin/box in the old recycling boxes, a cardboard box or a clear plastic bag. Please do not use black bin liners.

How do I get more recycling containers?

If you are a large household, you may be entitled to a larger recycling bin. Please contact us on 01865 249811.

What if my wheeled bin has gone missing?

If one of your wheeled bins has gone missing, please call Thames Valley Police on 101 to obtain a lost property reference number and then call us on 01865 249811 to request a replacement bin.

What if my food caddy has gone missing?

Call us on 01865 249811 or email recycling@oxford.gov.uk to request a replacement bin.

What if my wheeled bin, recycling box or food caddy is broken?

Please contact us on 01865 249811 or email recycling@oxford.gov.uk to request a replacement bin or box.

Why has my green bin been replaced with a smaller bin?

In order to continue increasing the amount of waste sent to be recycled, our refuse bin capacity has been reviewed and as a result the 180 litre capacity green refuse bins are now our standard size. Therefore any new or replacement green bins required in the future will be 180 litre.  As 80% of the average household bin can be recycled or composed, by using your blue recycling bins and food waste caddies fully you will find that the 180 litre green refuse bin is more than adequate for your needs.

What materials go in each bin?

Visit our What goes into each bin page for full details.

What if I can't fit all my general waste into my green wheeled bin?

Approximately 80% of the waste in the average household bin can be recycled or composted. Please make full use of your recycling bins before placing waste into your green wheeled bin. Visit our Excess Rubbish page for more information.

I have a large family/live in a shared house and my wheeled bin is not big enough. What can I do?

Oxford City Council is working hard to increase the amount of waste sent for recycling. Each household is provided with blue wheeled bins for recycling, food waste caddies and one green wheeled bin for anything that can not be recycled.

By using the blue recycling bin and food waste service fully, you should find the bins you currently have are sufficient.

However, large households may be entitled to a larger blue recycling bin or a larger green wheeled bin.

Larger green bins will not be issued unless everything that can already be recycled, is being recycled.

If you wish to be assessed for a larger or additional bin please complete our Request Large Bin online form.

If you are a HMO or flat site, it is your landlords responsibility to provide bins. Please ask your landlord to contact us directly on 01865 249811 or recycling@oxford.gov.uk.

How can I reduce the size of my bins?

By using the recycling service fully, you may find that the size of your bins is too large. If you would like a smaller bin, please email recycling@oxford.gov.uk or call 01865 249811. The request will be passed to a customer liaison officer to make an assessment.

Blue and Green Recycling Boxes

During October 2010 blue wheeled recycling bins were introduced across the city to replace blue/green recycling boxes in order to improve the recycling service. Residents can however continue to use and present boxes for recyclable material.

Micro Chipped Bins

Our wheeled bins are micro chipped. Each chip is linked to a specific serial number which relates to the property it was delivered to. These chips allow us to:

  • Track lost bins
  • Investigate missed collections
  • Locate crews

No personal information is held on the chips, only address data.
