Oxford Area Flood Partnership

Oxford Area Flood Partnership (OAFP) was formed after the floods in 2003, to reduce flood risk in the Oxford Area. The partners represent the following local councils and national organisations:

  • Environment Agency,
  • Network Rail,
  • Oxford City Council,
  • Oxfordshire County Council,
  • Vale of White Horse District Council
  • Thames Water PLC.

The partners each look after different parts of the vast network of pipes, culverts, ditches and rivers that carry water through Oxford.  However, riparian owners (whose land includes or adjoins waterways) are also responsible for keeping those waterways open.

The partners share information about flooding in the Oxford area and help each other to develop affordable remedies when problems involve two or more partners.

How often does OAFP meet?

OAFP meets as a whole four times each year, but partners are in regular contact much more often than that.

OAFP also holds an Open Meeting each autumn, for interested residents to attend.  This is normally held in the Oxford Town Hall.  If you would like to attend, please email us and we will confirm details nearer the time.

OAFP responds to flooding problems raised by members of the public and welcomes information that will help in understanding flooding.

Flooding can come from different sources:

  • Fluvial flooding (rivers),
  • Pluvial flooding (direct rainfall, surface run-off, ditches and streams),
  • Sewer overflows (excess flows or blockage in foul or surface water pipes), or
  • Groundwater (rising from below).

Information

OAFP produces a booklet about flooding in the Oxford Area, and an advice leaflet.  You can download these and a flood map below:
