How many university students live in Oxford?
It is difficult to know how many university students are living in Oxford at any one time. Oxford has two large universities - the University of Oxford and Oxford Brookes University - whose students tend not to live in Oxford all year round, but migrate in and out according to the university term times. A minority of students are year-round residents of Oxford, however. Oxford also has a number of short-term students who visit the universities and language schools.
At the 2001 Census, 26% of the working age resident population was a full-time student - the highest proportion in England and Wales.
Annual statistics on the number of students attending the two universities are also available - though a minority of these students will not live in Oxford. These show that in 2009/10 there were 32,000 full-time students studying at the two universities.
Where do students live in Oxford?
The 2001 Census provides statistics about where students live in Oxford. The main student areas are the city centre, to the north of the city centre around Woodstock and Banbury Roads and to the east of the city centre around Cowley Road and Headington.
