Age and Gender

How old is Oxford's population?

Oxford's population is relatively young due to the large number of university students in the city.  In 2010 it is estimated that 36% of the population was aged between 15 and 29 years (compared to a UK average of 20%).

How is the age of the population changing?

All age groups in the population - children, working age and pensionable age - are projected to increase in the future.  The number of people of pensionable age is projected to increase by one-third over the next 25 years.

To investigate how the age of the population will change in the future, you can use an interactive website provided by the Office for National Statistics.

Where do older and younger people tend to live?

People of pensionable age have their greatest concentrations in the north, north east and south of the city.  These areas include Wolvercote, Cutteslowe, Marston, Headington and Iffley.

Children and young people aged under 16 years have their greatest concentrations in different parts of the city - Rose Hill, Blackbird Leys, Barton and Summertown.
